  1. You are absolutely right concerning the improvements in the new eco-paints. The stuff we tried years ago was junk, but now-a-days they can hold their own with all but the very best latex products.

  2. Melanie,
I\’m very concerned w/VOC\’s especially inside the home. I once worked with a woman who had what she called \’enviromental illness\’. I know she must be thrilled with all the new paint options, as well as other green products, available now. I enjoyed your article.

  3. Another great low VOC paint is Devine Color out of Portland, OR. It comes in great designer colors and they ship it for free.

  4. I am presently using Olympic Premium Interior Satin and Flat w/No VOC\’s. I find the odor to be intolerable despite open windows. On one could sleep in a room that was painted on the same day. If the there are no VOC\’s, then what is causing the odor?

    Thank you.

I used an eco-friendly paint called ecotrend. They use recycled eggshells for their binder. They also add natural minerals to make their paint resistant to mold, mildew and bacteria. They had so many colors and my walls look great. I haven’t had as many headaches with the new paint job.

  6. Why not use eco-friendly painting sundries as well as paint. They perform as well, if not better than current plastic types and also make the job much easier, with re-usable, no washing out paint trays.

We used bio-shield on the exterior of our totally green off the grid home in Massachusetts. The mold problem and discoloration is horrendous. Contact with Bio-shield proved completely frustrating. They offered no information at all about removing their product so we could start over preserving our wooden exterior. We would never recommend this product for exterior surfaces.

    • Dorothy says:

Bio-Shield does not make an exterior paint, just a wood stain. If you used the interior paint on the exterior of your house, that could certainly be problematic. Please state exactly what you used. We are getting ready to paint our interior and exterior. I called Bio-Shield just to make sure, and they said they do not make an exterior paint. We have had a sample of their interior satin-finish paint on a bathroom wall, and it seems to be holding up very well to water.

Also, I am wondering about Farrow and Ball for the exterior. They do not disclose their ingredients, just to say that they make paint using natural ingredients. How would one know for sure?

  8. Although there has not been a push for Low to Zero VOC exterior paints, it is interesting to note, these Clay Paints have been around since the Egyptians.

  9. a great piece of information, am goin to paint my house this year and gaining some bits and parts of info..it was a really good part of info for me

  11. Hi,

Have you ever try AURO paint? I love it! The company has a wide variety of waxes, varnishes, paints, and wood stains of many colors. Their products are of a very high quality and are healthy to use.

You can purchase their products online at http://www.aurousa.com

I also recommend their airfresh paint, which is proven to breakdown pollutants in rooms into neutral substances.

The best company I found so far!

  12. Great Article…Thanks!

  13. The article never mentioned Chalk Paint, a very versatile Eco paint. The best of these is Autentico.
