04 Alternatives to Whipped Cream: Dairy Free Decadence!
Who needs dairy to top a decadent dessert? Try these alternatives to whipped cream instead!
The traditional garnish for holiday pies may be whipped cream, with its white peaks standing in stark contrast against pies of pecan or the rusty tones of pumpkin. This year, why not step off the old beaten path and try a different topping on your holiday pies.
With the holiday season just around the corner here are four delicious alternatives to try instead of whipped cream.
1. Soy Whipped Cream
You can just buy this at most grocery stores, well, at least the more eco-savvy ones. It’s more pricey than traditional whipped cream but those with dairy aversions will rejoice in how similar this alternative is in both texture and flavor. There is even an option for rice milk so those with soy allergies can indulge without substituting the flavor of their old stand by.

2. Tofu Pudding
This makes a slightly sweet topping that won’t overpower your dessert. Take two cups extra firm tofu and blend until smooth than add agave or maple syrup to taste. Usually about five tablespoons of sweetener is enough and you can also add extract or liquor for extra flavoring.

3. Candied Nuts
There are plenty of ready-made varieties available or you can make your own. Take a cup of sugar and mix in a teaspoon salt and a teaspoon of any other spices you might enjoy. A little bit of cayenne pepper always adds something special. Whip one egg white with a tablespoon water until foamy then fold in a pound of nuts until completely coated. Sprinkle with the sugar coating, lay coated nuts on a oil-coated pan and bake for 25 minutes at 325 degrees. Make some extra and you have holiday gifts as well.

4. Whipped Coconut Milk
With a little planning, this one is a great alternative that lasts for a few days without separating like whipped cream. Take a can of coconut milk and separate the solid from the water and place the solid part in a glass or metal bowl. Cover the bowl and leave in the fridge overnight along with the whipping utensil you will use to beat it. When efficiently chilled, whip the milk until soft peaks form then add a tablespoon sweetener and extract or liquor for flavor. Top your favorite desert with this whipped cream alternative and keep the rest in the frige without having to re-beat it.
