03 Homemade Toothpaste Recipes: Homemade Living
We love making homemade body care, and homemade toothpaste is next on the list! Here we share some good reasons to switch to homemade toothpastes, along with a few recipes to get you started!
First, why would you want to switch from the convenience of prepared toothpaste and begin making your own homemade toothpaste? Many choose to avoid ingredients common to toothpaste for these reasons:
– Fluoride: Perhaps the most controversial ingredient found in our home, fluoride is an unprocessed industrial by-product of the phosphate fertilizer industry. It is linked to brain and hormonal issues along with tooth problems too! It is actually listed as a poison on the toothpaste tube itself, which should be a warning to us all!
– Artificial colors: those blue, green and red colors in your striped toothpaste are doing you no good. There are many reasons to avoid artificial color, both in our food and in our body care, including connections to hyperactivity, and artificial colors are often derived from petroleum and contain toxic or cancer-associated chemicals. Ugh, spit that out!
– Glycerin: usually a natural ingredient, but has been linked to weakened tooth enamel over the long-term because it layers the teeth with a film that prevents the minerals in your saliva from interacting with your tooth enamel.
– SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate): according to Feelgood Style, sodium lauryl sulfate is a surfactant that is added to things like toothpaste and soap to make them foam but can cause irritation in people who are sensitive to it.
