If you plan on traveling long distances and need to rent a car, request a hybrid.
According to Fuel Economy, the 2008 Toyota Prius gets an average of 46 miles per gallon. Most standard vehicles get around 20 miles per gallon.
To get the best gas mileage, be sure to:
- Inflate your tires
- Get regular oil changes
- Have your car serviced at least every six months
- Pack light—as with air travel, extra weight requires extra gas
- Fill your tank with gas that is 10% ethanol
Trains running at high speeds emit about half the amount of carbon emitted by cars. Trains also support shared public transportation and keep cars off of the road.
Once you’ve reached your destination, park the car and stick to the public transit system. Supporting public transportation is an easy step towards decreasing our reliance on cars and oil.
