10,000 Gallons a Day of Animal Waste Fuel Head to Market

Last month a rural Minnesota factory began pumping out commercial-scale quantities of biodiesel made from animal waste like pig parts and waste fats… and almost any other waste fats and oils. The idea isn’t new, – - Sweden was able to reduce carbon emissions 9% below their Kyoto goal while growing their economy 44% by switching to district heating that uses this kind of process – - but it is new here. And better too.

When Drying Clothes on a Clothesline is Against the Rules

Drying clothes outside on a clothesline is an image of a simpler time, not to mention a standard recommendation on lists of ways to reduce the carbon footprint at home. It’s one of those decisions that seems like a no-brainer to do something good for the Earth- can anyone really have a problem with it? Perkasie, Pennsylvania, is one of many neighborhoods that do.

You buy something, bring it home, unwrap it, and toss the package in the trash can. On garbage day you put it all into a bigger trash can out on the curb and the magical garbage truck takes it away. But where does the garbage truck take the trash? Well, a landfill, or it gets burned, or it goes overseas, or something, right? The U.S. creates around 200 billion tons of trash every year- where does it go?
