The Crop Mob Unleashes Community on Sustainable Farms
Posted on Aug 24, 2010 by Scott James.
You may have seen a “flashmob” as part of a guerrilla marketing stunt in the last few years, where hundreds of people descend on an urban location to participate in a coordinated show that is a surprise to everyone but those involved. How would that marketing idea play out in the green world? The Crop Mob in North Carolina is digging on sustainable farms across the state to see what they can make grow. On one afternoon each month a group of volunteers gather at a chosen sustainable farm as a community to do the work it would take a solitary farmer months to do.

FDA & TTB Investigate Kombucha for Elevated Alcohol Content
Posted on Jul 08, 2010 by Jennifer Lance.
Kombucha tea, made from fermented yeast and bacteria often referred to as a “mushroom“, has become increasingly popular in recent years. Enjoyed since the 1800s, this beverage is touted for its detoxifying and energy boosting properties. Small amounts of alcohol are created in the process of fermentation, but the quantity is small enough to classify kombucha as non-alcoholic. Otarian Serves Up Carbon Footprints With Its Menu
Posted on Jul 01, 2010 by Scott James.
Eating is something we all have to do, but as all earth-conscious people know, fast food restaurants are not the place to do it. With a motto like, “Where you can enjoy delicious food that loves life and the planet,” you know that it’s more than just a business for her. Otarian claims to be the first restaurant in the world that traces and reports the carbon footprint of everything they serve.

The UN Urges a Vegan World
Posted on Jun 09, 2010 by Scott James.
What will the projected 9.1 billion people on Earth by 2050 eat? Are animal products a generation or two away from a stigma like smoking cigarettes? Last year Lord Nicolas Stern, a former adviser to the British government on the economics of climate change, said the world would be better off if we all ate vegetarian. Now, a UN report on climate change says that agriculture is as much of a danger with the rising population as fossil fuel consumption. The report says a substantial shift away from animal products is critical to address world hunger and the worst of climate change. The recommendations will be tough to swallow in the West, where meat and dairy are prevalent- and unsustainable, according to the report.

Have You Considered Keeping Bees?
Posted on May 26, 2010 by Zachary Shahan.
I just read an interesting piece on Sustainablog titled “Why I Decided to Keep Honeybees” and it was such a thought-provoking read for me I thought I’d share some of it here.
I never would have considered keeping bees (I don’t think) but I have been concerned about the rapid decline of bees in recent years and the author, Ziggy, brings up some interesting thoughts on this and the potential for more dispersed, small-scale beekeeping to (hopefully) help solve this problem.
