Not for the faint of heart, but one of the best ways to lower plastic refuse is by making your own cleaning and beauty products. The average household goes through about ten to twelve bottles of shampoo every year. That’s a lot of plastic which isn’t even including other hair treatments, conditioner and the body wash. Many homes choose liquid soap over bars adding yet another plastic bottle with which to deal. Besides being safer than the chemical-laden grocery buys, making your own body wash, shampoo and conditioner makes a huge impact by keeping containers out of the recycle bin, or worse, landfills.
