Choosing More Sustainable Pet Food with Annamaet Petfoods
We all want to give our furry friends the best life: a loving home, lots of time in the park, and of course, the best sustainable pet food.
Making sure you can get the best pet foods is an investment in your dog’s future health. Dogs have unique nutritional needs, and it’s imperative to give them the best foods to ensure a healthy life.
Rob Downey is one of America’s leading pet nutritionists and is the founder of Annamaet Petfoods. His passion for animals started at a young age with a puppy named Boots, and burgeoned into a love of dogsled racing. When one of his sled dogs became sick, he began to understand how nutrition can play a role in the health of the dogs.
“It was really life-changing for me when I discovered what an important role nutrition played in canine health, especially seeing what had happened with Heidi,” said Downey. “I switched majors, graduated and then went to do post-graduate work in nutrition from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.”
Downey’s love for animal nutritional research led to multiple publications of his research, some of which are still cited by veterinary nutritionists today. This research also made him realize that the next logical step was creating his own pet food.
Downey jokes, “we like to call it a farm-to-table experience for pets in the broadest sense in that not only is the produce used farmed locally but we are very cognizant of the quality, humane raising and the sustainability of our protein sources. It supports our company’s catch phrase, “Sustainability, Our choice. Their future.”
Better Foods for your Pets
Most animal foods are made of waste products from animal production plants, using less quality products and relying on fillers like corn and soy. But Annamaet wanted to do things far better for the planet and for the animals, and so they choose only human-grade meat for their pet foods. “Fortunately, Millennials who treat their pets as their fur babies are beginning to question ingredients and are becoming our greatest allies in promoting good health and pet nutrition,” says Downey.
Annamaet’s newest formulas are now Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified. The MSC Eco label ensures that all the fish used in that product is a certified sustainable source of fish that can be traced from boat to bag. Only seafood from fisheries that meet MSC’s strict standard for sustainability can be sold with the blue MSC label. These fisheries ensure that fish are caught at levels that allow fish populations and the ecosystems on which they depend to remain healthy and productive for this and future generations.
The Annamaet product line includes 11 dog food formulas, two cat food options, a treat line and three supplements. With the company’s science and nutrition background, Annamaet is continually exploring ways to bring the best products to the pet food market.
