Secure Home Services Explains why R-410A Refrigerants so Vital
As we enter the dog days of summer, the debate over safe coolants and refrigerants is heating up yet again. Some experts in the HVAC industry are concerned there may be a shortage of R-410A, a refrigerant that has replaced harmful predecessors. The global HVAC community has been moving toward an industry-wide phase-out of the refrigerant known as R22, in favor of the cleaner, more efficient R-410A.
R22 has been linked to the depletion of ozone layer and environmental pollution, so the switch to R-410A is not only timely, it’s necessary. The fundamental difference between the two refrigerants is simple: “unlike alkyl halide refrigerants that contain bromine or chlorine, R-410A (which contains only fluorine) does not contribute to ozone depletion, and is therefore becoming more widely used, as ozone-depleting refrigerants like R-22 are phased out. Since R-410A allows for higher SEER ratings than an R-22 system, by reducing power consumption, the overall impact on global warming of R-410A systems will be substantially lower than that of R-22 systems due to reduced greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.”
The total elimination of R22 refrigerants is expected to be finished in the United States by 2020, with Canada following closely behind. Tested and approved by the EPA, R-410A is manufactured under a variety of names, as the EPA’s website explains: “Both Puron and Suva 410A are marketing brands for ASHRAE R-410A refrigerant. Puron is Carrier Corporation’s brand name and Suva 410A is the DuPont brand for R-410A. Both have the same chemical composition and can be used interchangeably.”
“R-410A is a blend of HFC-32 and HFC-125 that performs very much like a single component refrigerant,” the EPA also notes. “Since R-410A acts very much like a single component refrigerant, any change in composition due to a leak is minimal. The system can be topped off, without removing the entire charge.”
It’s no surprise that companies using R-410A refrigerant compatible systems are seeing an uptick in business, as R22 becomes increasingly difficult to obtain, rendering systems that utilize R22 obsolete.
Canada’s Secure Home Services is one of those companies. With a mandate of helping Canadians reduce energy costs through reliable, eco-friendly heating and cooling units, offering air conditioning units that use the R-410A refrigerant is an important selling point for Secure Home Services. Servicing both Ontario and Alberta, Secure Home Services has seen positive response from their customers as a result of providing AC units that employ the eco-friendly R-410A refrigerant.
“Customers are more intelligent and more informed than ever,” Michael Stedman of Secure Home Services explains. “Many customers know about the various refrigerants used on the market and understand which ones are better for the environment than others.” Secure Home Services’ Ali Mohammad adds, “Our job at Secure Home Services is to make sure that the heating and cooling units we offer our customers are not only efficient, but also as eco-friendly as possible.”
For Secure Home Services and other providers of AC units, the news gets better. That’s because R-410A is not only better for the environment than refrigerant predecessors, units with R-410A also run more efficiently.
In fact, there are more benefits that R-410A offers: less toxicity; the refrigerant is nonflammable and non-corrosive; it operates under high pressure; has superior heat transfer; it can be used with steel, copper and brass; has lower associated installation costs; and produces negligible amounts of sound.
The benefits of R-410A also extend to manufacturing, “small systems can be designed to utilize less refrigerant along with fewer number of coils,” a Hub Pages report says. “It is also a popular choice for VRF systems which are suitable for a large number of building types.”
Providing one more piece of advice, Secure Home Services notes that the only disadvantage to R-410A is its incompatibility with older air-conditioning systems. Because R-410A requires higher pressurization, it can cause damage to older systems by generating higher torque and overloading the bearings. Prompting those in the business to suggest buying a newer system designed to handle R-410A as it will help save the environment, reduce cooling costs as well as overall maintenance costs.
