Choose #GreenEverywhere in your Life with prAna Clothing
I’m a serious minimalist when it comes to clothes. I have only a handful of items that I wear in pretty regular rotation, and most of my stuff is from the thrift store. But when I do buy new, I prefer to choose really sustainable brands that are doing good for people and planet (and making adorable things to wear).
One of the brands that stands out for both yoga and adventure gear is prAna. So when they asked if I wanted to participate in their #GreenEverywhere campaign in partnership with Avocado Mattress (link to other article), I jumped at the chance.
prAna is the type of company that I want to spend my hard-earned money on: they use a lot of organic materials like cotton and hemp, and many of their products are sustainable, recycled, and/or fair-trade certified. Not only that, but prAna prioritizes giving back to communities all over the world.
Their products are made for adventures, yoga class, the office, or lounging around during a self-care Sunday!
I was sent a few prAna items to try out, and I’m really stoked on both. I ordered the Kara jean, made from mostly organic cotton (and available in a range of cute colors). I choose sepia, since I don’t think I’ve ever owned a pair pants in that color. I have a very minimalist, monochrome wardrobe, so these jeans look adorbs with any of my black, white, or navy tees.
Kara jeans are made with 75% organic cotton, and have some polyester and spandex to give them just a bit of stretch. I’ve worn them multiple times without washing and the shape has maintained really well.
The second item I got to review was the Deedra sweater tunic, and it coincided with the arrival of a cold front here is the islands. I know, I know, it’s not REALLY that cold, especially for those living in truly cold regions (and hey, I get it – I grew up in Detroit!). But it’s super nice to cozy up in this loose, totally soft sweater for lounging around at home or keeping me warm for sunset on the beach.
This sweater runs pretty large: I ordered a small and it’s very roomy, so make note if you want it to be a little more fitted. This item is 53% organic cotton, along with acrylic, polyester, and wool.
Why Choose Organic Cotton?
I often hear an argument that we don’t need to worry about organic cotton ‘because we’re not eating it,’ but that’s really untrue. Organic agriculture is better for the land and for the people – whether we’re talking about food crops, seed crops, wine, or cotton or other fibers.
Organic agriculture doesn’t use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, which can work their way into the waterways seep into the ground, contaminating local water sources and damaging the delicate microbial/bacterial balance of the soil.
Secondly, there are humans growing these crops, and using chemical inputs means their health is directly at risk. Switching to organic methods reduces (or eliminates) exposure to chemicals and ensures a healthier community.
