Keep your feet Happy in Havaianas
Though many of you have toes buried in snow or slush at this moment, you can still dream of sunnier days when your little feets get to see the sunshine! My favorite way to traipse around our sunny island is in my pretty Havaianasslippahs (or flip-flops, to most of you). Havaianas is a Brazilian brand of footwear that makes super stylish and comfortable sandals for men, women, and children.
These little sandals are made mostly out of rubber (apparently there is a secret Brazilian recipe), and they offer a super comfortable footbed and strap. They are tighter than other sandals, but it means that the straps are less likely to break. They come a rainbow of colors and styles, and they even have a special line for blushing brides. These sandals are incredibly durable and long-lasting; I’ve had many pairs last for years, even with almost daily wear (one of the joys of living in Hawaii!). Not only are they soft and sturdy, they never get stinky like other brands of sandals (even when boys wear them!).
The company not only sells beautiful sandals across the world, they work in many ways to support conservation and the natural environment. They have a whole line of Eco-Havaianas that uses materials left over during regular sandal production to make a more sustainable sandal. They also look at broader conservation and social issues throughout the country. Havaianas is actively involved with the Institute for Ecological Research (IPE), a Brazilian NGO that works to promote habitat restoration, landscape conservation, education and community involvement with sustainable initiatives like agro-forestry. They also work with Conservation International to help protect the Brazil marine ecosystems. Additionally, they’ve created the Alpargatas Institute, which has helped over 250,000 students gain knowledge, experience, and confidence for a better future with a focus on physical education and keeping kids off the streets.
Some additional sustainable initiatives that Havaianas and their parent company undertake include:
- Activities to reduce electricity and water consumption
- Sensible development of materials to be used in our products
- Launch of ecological product lines
- Rubber and PVC residue recycling
- Environmental Education for employees
- Compression of non-recyclable residue
- Careful transportation and destination selection of residue
