Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax Movie and a Giveaway
From the creators of Despicable Me and the imagination of Dr. Seuss comes the 3D-CG feature Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, an adaptation of the classic tale of a forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope. The animated adventure follows the journey of a 12-year-old as he searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.
Danny DeVito will lend his vocal talents to the iconic title character of the Lorax, while Ed Helms will voice the enigmatic Once-ler. Also bringing their talents to the film are global superstars Zac Efron as Ted, the idealistic youth who searches for the Lorax, and Taylor Swift as Audrey, the girl of Ted’s dreams. Rob Riggle will play financial king O’Hare, and beloved actress Betty White will portray Ted’s wise Grammy Norma. The movie will premiere on March 2, 2012.
What I think about Lorax
I admit; The Lorax by Dr. Seuss was not my kids’ favorite book when they were young. I think it was too sophisticated for them to understand back then. And to prepare myself for this post, I read the book again the other day.
Boy, reading it again, it made me realize why (my) kids didn’t appreciate this book so much, as five year olds. The book is dark, Lorax was vague in demanding Once-ler to stop cutting Truffula trees, and ‘telling’ inhabitants to leave. And to a kid, I could only imagine how bullish he might seem. But as an adult and a greenie, I was disappointed that the mean and bullish Lorax was being portrayed as an “environmentalist”. Then, I wondered if he was being bossy and mean because he had ‘another’ agenda and really didn’t have the forest in mind.
Hopefully, the movie is brighter and more cheerful. And if the trailer is any indication, I hope it paints Lorax as a helpful and thoughtful and not so grim. It’s hard to tell what the movie will be like, based on the few minute trailer. But at least, the colorful, animated, and added story lines in the trailer seem to be more upbeat than the book.
Honestly, I wasn’t going to watch the movie but now that I read the book again, as a greenie, I am now curious to go see if the environmental message will be better delivered than the book. Besides, who wouldn’t want to see Betty White and Danny De Vito in a same film, even if they are just their voices? I’ll be the only adult watching the movie, without a kid.
