New York City’s Pier 57: A Shipping Container Shopping Center?
Architecture firm LOT-EK, is known primarily for building Puma City, a 11,000 square foot store made out of 24 shipping containers. The City is currently on a world tour. Now the firm is setting its sights on a bigger target–the redevelopment of Chelsea’s Pier 57 into a 170,000 square foot open-air market constructed partially from shipping containers.
LOT-EK and Youngwoo & Associates were chosen this week by the Hudson River Park Trust to redesign the pier, which will feature low-rent spaces for small businesses, a styled New York green space, a Contemporary Culture Center filled with entertainment, auctions, and galleries, an Underwater Discovery Center, and seasonal docks.
If completed as planned, Pier 57 might be the most visible shipping container project yet. Past efforts have included a a London hotel built from recycled shipping containers, and a Ukraine shopping mall that uses shipping containers to create indoor alleys.
