Save Water and Money, One Flush at a Time!
Toilets use a large amount of water each time the handle is pressed. In toilets made before 1982, up to seven gallons are used with every flush! While newer toilets have been vastly improved, using under 2 gallons per flush, there are other things you can do to conserve even more water, and save yourself some money in the process.
By converting to a newer, water-saving toilet, you can save gallons and gallons of water every day. There are now a list of toilets, approved by the EPA under their “Water Sense” program, that exceed current federal guidelines for gallons per flush, or gpf. High efficiency toilets are those that use less than 1.6 gpf. There are also what are called dual-flush toilets. With these models, there is the option for a full flush, using 1.6 gallons, or a half-flush, which uses just 0.8 gpf. The reduction in water usage by using high efficiency or dual flush toilets can account for great savings on your water bill, with EPA estimates at over $90 per year.
Not only are these efficient toilets a great option for savings on your water bill, but also you may qualify for even further savings through rebates that your local utility company might offer for upgrading. Ask them about your options.
In combination with efficient showerheads, faucets, washing machines, and outdoor irrigation, adding a water-saving toilet to your home will help conserve this valuable resource.
