Seasons iPhone App Makes Sure You Don’t Buy Strawberries in December

by Ariel Schwartz in Cell Phones, Fruits and Vegetables

Once upon a time, everyone knew when certain fruits and vegetables were in season. But now that we get blueberries from Argentina in January and peaches from Brazil in March, few people can tell the difference. That’s where the Seasons iPhone application comes in.

The $1.99 application contains information about which fruits, vegetables, lettuces, herbs, fungi and nuts are in season at any given time. So far, Seasons contains 170 entries with photos, short descriptions, and season data. It even detects your location based on GPS and wireless LAN information. And while Seasons has been available in Europe for awhile, it’s only now available in the U.S. In other words, no more excuses for buying fruit flown in from thousands of miles away.

If you’re serious about becoming a locavore, check out the Locavore iPhone app, which tells you when foods are in season and provides information about local farmer’s markets.
