Eco Twists to the Traditional Wedding Shower

by GLI Editors in Weddings

The term “wedding shower” may bring visions of a gathering at an aunt’s or grandma’s house where guests’ ages range from 19 to 89, a large sheet cake is served, and cousin Katie gives the bride outrageously sexy lingerie.

The modern bride, though, may be craving something a bit more unique than the traditional wedding shower.  Here are a few ways to make a wedding shower less about the cake and more about doing something novel, exciting, and green…

Wine Tasting is an Eco Wedding Shower Option

  • Wine Tasting. Wine is not only good for the heart, but vineyards that grow organic grapes with biodynamic farming methods do a service for the environment.  Sustainable wineries are great places to host a wedding shower and many have attached restaurants.  If you can’t make it to a winery, wine shops offer tastings and typically carry wines made from organic grapes.
  • Spas. A trip to a green day spa will help the bride release some of that pre-wedding stress.  Many spas use natural, organic products in their treatments, and wrap guests in soft organic cotton towels and robes.  Check the Green Spa Network to find member spas.
  • Weekend Getaway. Ecotourism is a growing industry and many travel agents can assist you in planning a green weekend away.  Ski trips, cruises, or a relaxing weekend spent at a local hot spot can be made into green mini-breaks by encouraging guests to travel in hybrid vehicles, staying at green hotels, and eating at local restaurants that offer sustainable, organic cuisine.
  • Potlucks. Give potlucks a green facelift by requesting that guests bring their favorite organic, local foods.  Give a green prize to the guest who does the best job wowing the crowd.
