I agree, they really set the standard for other, well, standards bodies. :) For anyone interested in hearing more about them, there's an interview here.

FSC is probably the best certification out there. It is being embraced by a lot of companies, and even the WTO respects it, so it is no barrier to international trade. I try to go for it always. This is where I buy from, and they have treated me right so far. I recommend them if anyone is in the market for FSC lumber.

Hey - great article and very important information. Very good point about not burning CCA treated lumber, as the ash is extremely toxic. Check out www.arsenichometest.com for test kits that you can use to test your wood for arsenic.

Aluminum decking is very green friendly without all the poisons of treated wood. It has great structural strength and is recyclable. Please add aluminum decking to your list of options.

I like your site - it condenses academic theory into digestible logic, however you have one glaring error in your quest for sustainability under the heading \"looking beyond the porch\". We should be encouraging increases use of lumber - that stimulates more plantation forests to be planted then more wood is available at competitive prices etc and the cycle continues. refer www.nzwood.co.nz
