Vacations consist of more than congested jet airliners and smog-filled cities.  While tourism is often pointed to as a big contributor to global warming, it’s important to understand that travel wears many faces.  There will always be a place for those who like to bake on the beach and lounge at the resort, but The International Ecotourism Society reports that nature tourism has been growing at a rate of more than 20 percent a year since the 1990’s.  Nature travelers prefer to go beyond generic hotels and tired monuments and venture deep into the countryside or the forest.  Several environmental groups go so far as to offer their own “green trips”.  Trip fees go toward habitat protection, and volunteer-travelers are invited to participate in research and conservation activities.

Eco Tourism Africa: A Real Adventure!

Eco tourism is big business in Africa and there are many tourism companies claiming to promote it.  Although some companies are greenwashed, there are many that are legitimately working to promote environmental responsibility.

One such company is Natural Habitat Adventures, which is the first carbon neutral travel enterprise established.  Being carbon neutral means that a company has paid to offset all the emissions created during a guest’s visit.  NHA also provides a calculator to its guests, allowing them to determine how many emissions were generated during their air travel so that these can be offset, as well.  The company’s site claims that one-third of all greenhouse gases are generated during travel-related activities.

Eco Tourism Belize: A Beautiful Natural World to Explore

Belize has a wonderfully unique, yet fragile ecosystem that natives are anxious to preserve.  With the recent boost in tourism to this country, Belize has established BETA, or the Belize Eco Tourism Association, with a code of conduct designed to reduce the impact of visitors on the environment.

This code of conduct commits its members to keep tourism establishments to a small and manageable size, promote the use of renewable resources, minimize aluminum and styrofoam waste, and to conserve the flora and fauna of Belize.
