Britain Brings New Climate Change Recommendations on Meat to the Table

Governments around the world are issuing varying calls related to sustainability, but most of them focus on political and financial issues. Typically, governments don’t get involved in making food recommendations, but Andy Burnham, Britain’s Health Secretary is embracing the web that links food, sustainability, and personal health. Calling climate change a “very real and present danger” to health, he has issued an official government recommendation that Britons eat a third less meat.

Artificial, Engineered Soggy Meat Grown in Netherlands Lab

Engineered food has just taken another move towards science fiction: artificial meat. Researchers in the Netherlands have grown what they describe as “soggy pork” in a laboratory and believe it will be available for human consumption in about five years. The artificial meat was grown from the live muscle tissue of a pig.

World’s Largest Meat Exporter Pledges No Cattle from Deforested Amazon Areas

The world’s largest exporter of meat products announced that it has pledged to no longer purchase cattle raised in deforested areas of the Amazon after September 23, 2009. The company, JBS-Friboi, is also one of the largest companies in Brazil, which makes their decision very prominent to other businesses and sets a standard for other sustainability efforts in South America.

World’s Fourth Largest Cattle Beef Trader Takes Initiative to End Amazon Destruction

Meat Free Mondays: Paul McCartney’s Global Warming Campaign

Sir Paul McCartney and his late wife Linda have long been famous vegetarians, including writing several vegetarian cookbooks. Now the Beatle is promoting Meatless Mondays as a way to educate and promote family activism. The idea is simple: Go meat-free one day a week. This campaign follows on the announcement by the United Nations last fall:
In terms of immediacy of action and the feasibility of bringing about reductions in a short period of time, it clearly is the most attractive opportunity. Give up meat for one day [a week] initially, and decrease it from there.
