Scurvy is one of those diseases of legend, conjuring up images of pirates and explorers of the sea. When I think of scurvy, I still recall an educational video shown in elementary school of sailors falling ill from a lack of vitamin C. Unfortunately for children in England, this legendary illness is on the rise.

Rutabaga: The Underrated Root Vegetable

It’s Winter Gardening Time

Winter gardening is my favorite, as I love cool weather crops and always feel like I am defying nature to pick carrots in December, but you have to get started now.

Locavore Ideas: Visit a “Pick Your Own” Farm

Recently a friend visited with fresh organic blueberries her family had picked at a local farm. The pie she made was scrumptious, and the family experience was certainly quality time. As a child, the only farm I ever visited to “pick your own” was a Christmas tree farm. Even though we have an extensive garden and orchard, I will make sure my kids get to experience the organic blueberry farm.
