If you want to reduce fossil fuel use and increase renewable energy, one idea is to do an Energy Robin Hood- tax coal and use the money to fund renewable energy projects. And that’s exactly what India is planning to do- the world’s fourth largest polluter is imposing a clean energy tax of 50 rupees ($1) per metric ton of domestic and imported coal. India used 375 million tons of coal last year- meaning the tax could raise around 25 billion rupees per year (about $500 million).

The Federal government is asking the fuel industry to incrementally raise the levels of ethanol in the country’s gas. California has state legislation called the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 calling for car fuels to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The California Air Resources Board counts indirect GHG’s created in the production of ethanol, meaning it will not be part of California’s solution when the plan starts in 2011. The Air Resources Board believes it is doing its duty, as “the Legislature declared that global warming poses a serious threat to the economic well-being, public health, natural resources, and the environment of California.” The ethanol industry isn’t about to say aw, shucks.

Producing fuel out of thin air sounds like a pipe dream, but a new process from a biofuel company promises to be able to turn CO2 and sunlight into fuel, bypassing the current need for large amounts of agricultural land and water to produce biomass feedstock.

Ethanol production has its detractors in those who point out the inefficiencies of the process and the use of agricultural land and water involved, but a new process may help to change some of that. Soaking the kernels of corn before grinding them in ethanol production results in more ethanol and usable co-products – about 20 percent more – says a new study published in Cereal Chemistry.

The modern day car owes much of its history to Henry Ford, who dreamed of “producing an automobile that was reasonably priced, reliable, and efficient…”  Many of Ford’s dreams have not come to fruition since Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903.  It is debatable how affordable and reliable today’s autos are, and the average car’s fuel efficiency leaves much to be desired.  Today’s auto industry is not what Ford envisioned, especially considering he predicted cars would be constructed of hemp and run on biofuels.
