A radical new design in wind turbines takes a page from the design of jet turbine technology to generate three times the amount of power as a standard wind generator using propellers. The Dragonfly Wind Turbine uses three sub chambers working in line to speed up the airflow inside the turbine, which may have far-reaching potential in the wind energy field.
The fundamental flaw in every wind turbine is that none of them actually speed up the air – they all base their functionality on relative wind speed and will only produce energy if the wind is blowing. The current systems extract less than 50% of the wind’s energy and are only working about a third of the time!
According to Dragonfly, the nature of the new turbine’s inner wing design increases the air speed to create more power – up to three times the average of a standard wind generator. The new technology is dubbed the “Body Ring Airfoil”, which takes the air flowing into it and speeds it up as it comes in contact with each sub chamber. The chambers act as defusers so by the time the air reaches the third chamber, the smallest, the air inside is moving as fast as the air outside.
The nacelle of the Dragonfly was inspired by the technology of the SR 71 Blackbird, with a unique nose cone capable of expanding over 600% in size, increasing or decreasing the air speed and flow passing through the unit. The generator is housed inside the shroud, or nacelle, and is similar to the jet turbo prop system which generates electricity. The faster the wind flowing through the unit, the faster the tail blades in the generator will spin.
According to Dragonfly Industries, two computer dynamic fluid (CDF) tests on the design were completed by an independent software company, SolidWorks, and the results are promising for moving forward with prototypes. Test results found that Dragonfly breaks the law – the Betz Law – and proves that more than 59% of the wind’s power can be harvested with the right design.

Is T, Boone Pickens right when hes says it is so? Were Scientific American kidding around when they said the same about Solar Power in the American South West? Is any of this worth knowing? Will Americans stay addicted to gasoline until “Third World” conditions prevail in America? Even our schools rated only 32nd in the world today, are suffering. Are we following the U.S.S.R. into the abyss? Can electric bullet trains reduce our foreign oil bill, the one that is ruining our economy today? Must we continue being “Blackmailed” by parasite Oil countries abroad due to our own addiction? Are their alternatives? Does anyone in America give a damn anymore?
While I would like to believe that this is true. some independent comparisons of this with standard turbines in identical conditions would be more creditable. Just because the manufacturer says something, that doesn’t make it true.
Side-by side comparisons with reproducible results are proof.
So here is what doesn’t makes sense to me.

Is it being implied that the dragonfly can generate energy even without wind? I think there is another word for such a machine.
- I think one should be suspicious when claims are made that break physical laws (betz law). Even in theory all the energy cannot be extracted, since this would bring the airspeed behind the windmill to zero, and block the wind in front from entering the mill.
- The current wind turbine design allows a windmill to extract 59% of the energy in theory, and 45% in tests. So a triple increase is 135%. That’s quite amazing and impossible too, unless the triple increase is because that it can produce energy at wind speed outside the range of a normal windmill.
- It also seems to me that the fan area spanned by the dragon fly must be much smaller, otherwise the construction itself is huge. A smaller fan area would mean a smaller volume of air will come through the windmill. So even if it has a higher efficiency, it should produce less energy.
Perhaps somebody can enlighten me?
Just checked their webpage and, and yes, they actually claim that “Dragonfly also produce electrical energy in NO WIND at all.” Well, that certainly puts the final nail in the coffin from my perspective
at least some body is doing some thing and moving his way forward i think that after the lunch of the prototype they will figure out the ways to improve it and use it more efficiently
I have a proto type of a wind turbin thats 10 times better than the 0ne I saw at the topof the page I am working on a utilities patent on it right now when I get it I will send you a copy of it .yours truely Richardg
I am very very sceptical about this. The company only managed to produce some nice computer graphics, and already have enormous claims. The limited information available on the website suggests that they either discovered that some fundamental physical laws are wrong, or they just don’t understand basic physics.
There is another solution to the problem that has been over looked due to most ideas put into other applications, never the less, a self maintained motor that has an intial start up from an outside energy source and “jumped” into the energy currculation created by connecting generators, in a line, to a well refined gearbox from a company that has high torque expirence, would in fact put an end to most major electric energy sources like coal. Unfortanetly no one has the money to start a project of that size due to the prices of generators that create power, like the wind turbines. Could an act be started or is it an “over green” idea for this time period?

Its been a while since this posting… as the owner of Dragonfly let me just clear the air here. Dragonfly has been independently tested by 3 sources. All 3 sources came back with the same results. Our Last test actually provide us with numbers, I would like to share at this time. As you can see Dragonfly is made up of, not one generator, but 3. Keep this in mind. The last Engineering company that conducted tests not only validated the information but told us that in a 27mph wind, the air speed up to 33 mph before hitting the blades. On the second chamber it produced 34 mph and by the time it hits the last generator the air is 39mph… that’s a 45% increase relative to the speed of the air just on the tail alone.
Do I have anything else to prove… no, the results of all three tests confirm that we will harness more of the winds energy.
Now, lets look at the year long study produced by Bonneville Power Administration… where they state a 1.5Mw unit was rated after a year long study. According to this report your average 3 bladed system produces energy only 22.8 percent of the time? Thats like buying a $100K car and telling you, Im sorry it only works about 2.8 months out of the year! Who in their right mind would buy something you could use only 2.8 percent of the time? Its funny how this industry has managed to even sell these things.
I can also tell you the image posted here is not exactly how Dragonfly looks today. You are looking at Version 1, we are currently working on Dragonfly WT7. We just had a model built to show future clients the entire concept. And we are looking for funding to get to the prototype built.
So to the skeptics, I fully understand your view point… but the truth, if you look back far enough in history, this idea, with variations on the design has already been proven to work and work better then 3 bladed systems. 2.4 times better to be exact. I would invite you to google “vortec 7″, “FloDesign”, or “WindTamer”. There is even a new one from Japan called the WindLens? In their video they actually show how a ducted system increases the speed of the air… We are just doing it with a better design that has one feature the others don’t, They are not as Scalable!
So, while the design has been refined, the results are better then we expected which means the end product WILL be better then any 3 bladed system… if you take in to account that we actually CAN speed up the air that just means more power for you in slower winds. As for the other claims, “No Wind at all”? We found the answer to that one too… and THAT is going to really shock this industry, but right now its a company secret. But if you put as much thought as we have into this concept you could find the answer too!
